You slept eight hours (okay, maybe seven and a half). You’ve cut back on caffeine. You even said no to that late-night Netflix binge. And still—you’re tired. I am talking bone-deep tired. The kind of fatigue that doesn’t go away with a nap or a good night’s sleep.
Sound familiar?
If you’re a woman in your 30s, 40s, or 50s asking yourself, “Why am I always tired?”—you’re far from alone. At Verdure Wellness Clinic, this question comes up almost daily. And while yes, life is busy and stress is real, there’s often something deeper at play. Something sneaky. Something hormonal.
My Own Wake-Up Call (Pun Fully Intended)
Before I dive into the science-y stuff, let me tell you a little about how I got here. Years ago, I was running a full schedule, size days per week, starting a business, trying to eat “clean,” squeezing workouts in between clients, and keeping up with a million invisible to-dos.
I figured my constant fatigue was just the price of being a woman who “has it all.” But the foggy brain, afternoon crashes, and drag-myself-out-of-bed mornings told a different story.
Turns out, I wasn’t lazy, unmotivated, or just “getting older.”
I was dealing with hormonal burnout. Specifically—adrenal dysfunction.
What Your Hormones Have to Do With It
Let’s break it down. Your adrenals—two little glands that sit on top of your kidneys—are part of your stress response system. When life feels overwhelming (whether from traffic, deadlines, emotional load, or just being a woman in this world), they pump out cortisol, your main stress hormone.
But here’s the catch: your body doesn’t know the difference between “I’m late for work” stress and “I’m being chased by a tiger” stress. It just responds.
Over time, constant stress = constant cortisol = adrenal fatigue symptoms in women like:
- Persistent fatigue (even after sleep)
- Cravings for salt or sugar
- Anxiety or irritability
- Low motivation or burnout
- Trouble falling asleep—or waking up wired at 2 a.m.
- Brain fog or forgetfulness
And while “adrenal fatigue” isn’t always recognized in conventional medicine, we see its effects in real women every day. It’s less about your adrenals “giving out”—and more about your body being stuck in survival mode.
Additionally, changes in your hormones such as progesterone, testosterone, and estrogen during your 30s, 40s and 50s can change our mood, sleep quality, and even cognitive function, contributing to that sense of never-ending fatigue!
Progesterone is our sleepy hormone that fluctuates in the luteal phase. Estrogen keeps our mind sharp and our metabolism high. Testosterone helps improve motivation, energy and metabolism. Declining levels or imbalances of these hormones are common in peri-menopause and other hormone conditions like PCOS.
Why Nutrition Matters (and not in the “Just eat a salad” way)
When your hormones are off balance, your nutrition needs change. And spoiler alert: you can’t out-supplement a diet that’s working against you.
Here’s where I often start with tired women in my office:
🍳 Prioritize protein at breakfast.
Skipping meals or starting your day with carbs (even “healthy” ones like fruit or oatmeal) can spike blood sugar, then crash it—leaving you more tired by 10 a.m. All the science points to the benefits of a big protein-rich breakfast which helps regulate cortisol, satiety, and energy.
🥑 Support your blood sugar all day long.
This means eating every 3–4 hours, including protein, fiber, and healthy fats at each meal. Think: grilled salmon and greens, lentil stew with avocado, or a turkey wrap in a gluten-free tortilla with hummus.
🌱 Nourish your micronutrients.
Women dealing with chronic fatigue are often low in magnesium, B vitamins, and iron. These are key for energy production—and your adrenals need them to function.
Cut the shame, not the carbs.
Carbs aren’t the enemy. It’s how and when you eat them. Incorporate complex carbs like sweet potato, quinoa, or chickpeas—especially at dinner—to help calm the nervous system and support sleep.
Rest Isn’t Laziness—It’s Medicine
This was a hard lesson for me. As high-achieving women, we’re often praised for pushing through. Hustling. Multitasking. Doing it all. But what if your body is asking you to do less? What if tiredness isn’t a flaw to fix—but a message to receive?
When we stop ignoring our fatigue and start investigating it, things begin to shift.
You don’t have to live in survival mode. You don’t have to accept “just tired all the time” as your new normal. And you definitely don’t have to figure it out alone.
